The first steps on the road to my Hobby Resolution 2012 2
Ok so as you will have noticed from one of my other posts my New Years Hobby Resolution is to buy, build, paint and play with 2 new armies for 2 new Game Systems during 2012 that will cost me combined less than 1 investment in a GW Core System army as if I was a first time buyer!
I thought it best to clarify that rule number 5 on my list is THE most important rule and it states that the combined cost of the 2 new armies/Game Systems must cost less than 1 GW Core Game Army as if I was buying into GW for the first time! This includes the cost of the Core Rulebook, the Codex/Army Book, Templates, Counters and the Miniatures required, but doesn’t include the cost of dice, tape measure, glue, spray, paint & carry case (this is because I wouldn’t require these investing in a New Game System)!
So how do I work out what I can Spend?
Firstly I will use the suppliers/manufacturers prices NOT those from a discount retailer. I then thought I would scour the www. and see if anyone else had done a comparison and found this statement:
“I will be starting a 1750 point Tyranid army which I believe is the most expensive army for the respective game system.”
FOR THE COMPARISON I WILL LOOK AT “A FULL ARMY” AS THE REQUIREMENT. FOR THIS I TAKE THE AVERAGE POINTS REQUIRED TO PLAY AND BUILD A LIST THAT IS LARGER BY ENOUGH TO ALLOW FOR TWEEKS.
1750pts will give some flexibility to the army that the person would play with as average games would be 1500pts. So I then read the 1750pts Tyranid list. I have always wanted to do a Tyranid Army so this seemed to be the one to use and as a man after my own heart, the comparison only used models currently available through retail (aka no Tervigons) to keep things fair and was as follows:
Sample Tyranid Army – 1750Pts
£36.00 - HQ – Hive Tyrant – 200Pts
£46.50 - Elites – 3x Hive Guard – 150Pts
£46.50 - Elites – 3x Hive Guard – 150Pts
£15.50 - Elites – Deathleaper – 140Pts
£36.00 - Troops – 20 Hormagaunts – 200Pts
£36.00 - Troops – 20 Termagaunts – 100Pts
£36.00 - Troops – 20 Termagaunts – 100Pts
£36.00 - Troops – 10 Genestealers (w/ Broodlord) – 200Pts
£36.00 - Heavy – Mawloc – 170Pts
£36.00 - Heavy – Mawloc – 170Pts
£36.00 - Heavy – Mawloc – 170Pts
£35.00 - Warhammer 40,000 Rulebook
£20.00 - Codex Tyranids
£10.25 - Warhammer 40,000 Counters Set
£5.10 - Warhammer 40,000 Templates Set
£466.85…. WOW!!!!
So with my total in mind it is time to look at my first game system…Saga!
First off the size of a Saga army is much smaller than that of a Warhammer 40,000 army which is why I plan to do 2 systems for the same price. I will however be doing a Full Army for this system which as stated above is slightly bigger than the average game size, which for Saga is 4pts and so will do a 6pts army!

Sample Viking Army – 6Pts
£3.50 - Special Character - Harald Hardradda – 1Pt
£5.50 - Hearthguard - 4 Varangian Guard – 1Pt
£33.00 - Hearthguard - 4 Berserkers – 1Pt
- Hearthguard - 4 Hirdmen – 1Pt
- Warriors - 8 Bondi – 1Pt
- Warriors - 8 Bondi – 1Pt
£25.00 - Saga Core Rulebook
£12.00 - Viking Saga Dice Set
£7.00 - Specialist Saga Measuring Sticks and Fatigue Markers
£4.00 - 40 Warmachine Bases
£90.00 – AWESOME!!
With only £90.00 spent on Saga and my Viking Warband it leaves me £373.85 to play with for the other project……unless i pick up a second faction!!!
Hope you enjoyed this! As I start to get these together I will post pics as you’d expect! Join me later and find out how I’m getting on!

It’s gonna be Warlord by Reaper Miniatures, it’s a 28mm Fantasy Skirmish game, you get to have things inspired by D&D in your force like beholders etc!!
