Attack the Settlement!
Well Portal Wargaming has a great selection of Sci-Fi & Fantasy Terrain, some 15mm WWII and 28mm generic scenery. I knew I could make a SAGA gaming board just using the woods, hills, ponds & Rivers but I really wanted these games to have the feel of the Viking Age about them, there was only one thing to do……order some new terrain.
The plan would be to make two 3ft x 4ft gaming boards. With Portal Wargaming already having hills, rocks, rivers, ponds & woods i decided that what was missing was some buildings and walls or fences. I found that Gripping Beast had some really nice Viking Age Dwellings and decided to order one of the Large Timber-framed Long Houses and a Medium Wattle & Timber Dwelling. The walls were a new release from Warlord Games – the Ruined Stone Walls Set.
All of the scenery was cast in resin. There was no assembly required and there was minimal cleaning required. After soaking and scrubbing in warm soapy water they were ready to prime.
The buildings & Walls were primed with Army Painter Matt Black Primer and then base coated in Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint.
The Walls were very simple to paint Drybrushing Game Colour Extra Opaque Heavy Grey over the brown followed by the previous colour mixed 50:50 with Skull White. The base was then Drybrushed with P3 Paints Menoth Base followed by P3 Paints Menoth Highlight.
The Large Timber-framed Longhouse & Medium Wattle & Timber Dwelling were painted together. P3 Paints Menoth Highlight was added 25:75 to the Burnt Umber Acrylic paint and applied to the timber areas using the Drybrushing Technique followed by a 50:50 mix of the same colours. The Wattle on the Medium building was Drybrushed with Vermin Brown. The Thatched Roofs were Drybrushed using Khemri Brown followed by P3 Paints Menoth Base and finally a 50:50 mix of Menoth Base & Menoth Highlight.
