Tyrants Legion Update 18/06/12

eagle

Ok guys as you will have read previously I have started a Warhammer 40,000 project!!! I am doing an Tyrants Legion for the Astral Claws – a mix of Imperial Guard and Space Marines. I have a couple of cool ideas and themes running through the force, there will be parts from a lot of different manufacturers including Anvil Industry and Forge World to name but a few!

I have sat at home with my list for 500pts written and last week managed to paint the HQ Choice & Troop Choice 1. I am however awaiting delivery of some parts from Forge World, It has taken them over a week to acknowledge my order and 2 phone calls to find out why the order hasn’t progressed……”the Astral Claws shoulder pads are out of stock and wont be back in stock until 22/6/12″ and to top things off my order is at the back end of the orders! They have since agreed to split the order and post what they have in stock, so any day now I will get my Exterminator turret and will be able to paint the Heavy Support Choice for the 500pts army. This is in comparison of an order from Anvil Industry which arrived the very next day!!!

So the army so far (listed in their current state):

Before I get into that I think it is only fair to point out that I am painting up some extra pieces to allow me to tweak the list or play bigger games!

PhotobucketHQ 1 – Centurion – painted (not in 500pts)
HQ 2 – Auxilia Command Squad – painted

Troop 1 – Auxilia Squad – painted
Troop 2 – Space Marine Cohort Squad – Part Assembled (awaiting Forge World)
Troop 3 – Auxilia Armsmen Cadre – Assembled (not in 500pts)
Troop 3 Dedicated Transport – Chimera – Painted (not in 500pts)
Elites 1 – Venerable Dreadnought – Painted (not in 500pts)
Heavy 1 – Vindicator – Painted (not in 500pts)

So while I have been working on this I get a message in the Portal Wargaming Facebook Group with a link to the 2nd 6th Edition Teaser from Games Workshop which I have shared below:

OFFICIAL 40k Teaser Trailer 2

A Tyrant’s Legion – An Astral Claws Army

Ok, the cat is out of the bag………..I have fallen off the wagon……….I am doing 40k again!

My brother and a few of the guys and gals from Portal Wargaming laid down the challenge, had I still got it in me to build, paint and play Games Workshop, build, paint and play a mass model not skirmish game?

So not one to back down I decided I would work on a new Warhammer 40,000 project. So I wanted power armour but I wanted to prove I could still paint more than a skirmish style force so scoured through my Imperial Armour books for a project……one stuck out………. Astral Claws, more specifically a Tyrant’s Legion!!! This is a variant army list included in the Imperial Armour Vol.9 Book – The Badab War Part 1. It is a combined arms of guard and marines, not their full lists but for an example I have to have a 20 man sqd of guardsmen as a base for the list and can have better trained guardsmen (storm troopers) and marines! The marines use the guard as a meat shield and get +1 to their cover saves if the shot goes through a guard squad!!!!!

This will be a slow grow poject and I had decided that it was an Imperial Armour list and as such would need to include some Forge World models/parts in the army……..I love the Forge World Resin Stuff!!! The first step would be a 500pts nearly all Auxilia Guard force, followed by a 750pts force, 1000pts and finally a 1500pts army. As per my usual rules I want each stage to be fully painted before I start playing games with it!!!

Now as I write this, Games Workshop have just released a teaser video telling us that Warhammer 40,000 6th Edition is to be released on the 23/06/12 so my best laid plans might just need rethinking. I mean we could be looking at an increase in average game size, the force organisation chart being replaced with percentages, who knows what else!!!

I for one am actually excited and want to get my army painted so I can play games as the new edition is released!!!!

So what have I done so far????

I have built and painted 2 HQ Choices, the first is an Astral Claws Centurion, I converted this model out of parts from the Dark Angels Sprue, Space Marine Command Sprue, Devastator boxed set & the Black Templars Character High Marshal Helbracht. This model isn’t actually in my 500pts list by I wanted to test paint a model before committing to the army choice!!

The second is a Auxilia Guard Command Sqd and is made from a Titan Princep and 4 Rogue Trader era Guardsmen!!!

AuxillaCmd

I have built and painted a troops choice, this one is a compulsory choice in the list and is an Auxilia Guard squad.

AuxillaSqd

I have just placed an order with Forge World which contains some Astral Claws Shoulder Pads, Astral Claws Transfer sheet and a Leman Russ Exterminator turret, when this arrives I will be able to finish assembly of my second Troops Choice – a Space Marine Cohort Squad. So while I wait patiently for my order I set about painting a couple of things that aren’t in my initial lists but will allow for variation as time goes on. The first of these pieces is an Heavy Support Choice in the form of  a Vindicator, this pic is a WIP shot as the finished model will be weathered around the bottom with the dust of the plains but can’t be done until the transfers are applied!!

The second of these additional pieces is a Elites choice…..a Venerable Dreadnought!

So that’s my work so far, what do you think???

POP!!! Goes My New Years Hobby Resolution

As many of you are aware I am a magpie gamer, a hobby whore, whatever you want to call people who: COLLECT LOTS OF DIFFERENT ARMIES FOR LOTS OF DIFFERENT SYSTEMS!!!! What you may also know is that each year I make a New Years Hobby Resolution and each year since I left Games Workshop as a Store Manager this has been the same: Plan a new GW investment, work out its cost and then try to do 2 new systems/armies with a combined cost less than that of the GW investment. So we are now 6 months or half way into 2012 and I thought it about time I look at what I have done so far in 2012!

Photobucket

The Year so far:

Photobucket
I began 2012 with a catch up of my 2011 hobby resolution and the wonderful game of Dystopian Wars by Spartan Games. This was a total break from my plan but I needed to play games with my Prussian Naval Fleet, for this SteamPunk game, to finish off my previous years hobby resolution. A massive thanks to Ian Hill, Andie Harper, Edd Barfield, Dave Amos & Gordon Snellgrove for the company while doing this system, I had a Broadside Blast!!!

I had the chance to paint up my Christmas presents from my brother….my MERCS USCR! I have yet to play a proper game of this system and as I didn’t buy them I can’t claim them as part of my New Years Resolution.

So by this point I thought it was about time to get on with my actual planned stuff for 2012 and the first being SAGA.

Photobucket

This is a really great game. It was not at all what I expected, I had images of historical wargaming and the quality of the models used for these games and these preconceptions were wrong. SAGA is a beautifully bloody, fast paced Viking-age skirmish game. I bought, built, painted and played with a Viking force. I planned out a 6pts army and have had an awesome time sending the enemy troops to the pile of  the dead and wishing my battle brothers a safe journey to the gates of Valhalla! My gracious troop of fellow gamers collected themselves 4pts forces, 2 welsh warbands, a Scots warband, 2 Viking warbands, a Norman warband and a Joms Vikings! Thanks needs to go to Andie Harper for the AWESOME games on very late nights at Portal Wargaming!!

a little bit of this thrown in for the mix:

GRUNTZ is a 15mm Sci-Fi game that allows you to use any 15mm Sci-Fi models in your games and I decided to build a quick and easy force of humans from GZG and paint them up, don’t think I’ll actually get to play this game but I do enjoy painting 15mm models so it was a great experience!!!

and for the best part of the year I have anticipated and then rejoiced in the release of Empire of the Dead:

A total distraction from my New Years Hobby Resolution, I am totally in love with this game from West Wind Productions!!!! Victorian, Infernium fueled horror this game has absolutely everything you can want from a skirmish game! It is elegant, fast paced, fun whether you play it as one off games or link your games using the beautifully written Mordheim-esque campaign system!!! I have played so many great, memorable games of this that I have to say this has been my game of the year so far!!!! I have painted my way through 3 crews for this game and have a 4th waiting to go!! Thanks to Ian Hill, Andie Harper, Ben Cox, Edd Barfield, Stu Gadd & Damion Dakin for the great games so far and here’s hoping for many more throughout the year!

So what does the next 6 months have in store??

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Later in the year I will be doing a Crusaders army for Warlord as planned but the title of the post you are reading is: POP!!! Goes My New Years Hobby Resolution so even though sticking with my Hobby Resolution was the plan, something has happened to make my pledge go POP!!!

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
It was pointed out to me that I haven’t actually done anything Games Workshop Since I left the company and have been focusing on mainly skirmish games, a rumour is spreading that I don’t have it in me anymore to paint more than a handful of models for a system and so I feel a challenge has been set and so it is time to break my Hobby Resolution and actually do some Games Workshop!!!

PROJECT ASTRAL IS ON THE HORIZON!!!
