2013 Hail Caesar Project: Dacians Pt.1

So for those who don’t know me I am Dave “Scorpius_GLC” Barfield, I have been suffering with severe Depression and Anxiety Issues for many years, I am also a hobbyist who loves buying, building painting & playing with Toy Soldiers!!!

I have found that through the dark times of my Mental Illness a good support network REALLY helps! For most this will be close family and friends…..for me this is also true, I have a VERY loving & supportive family, but I have a larger family than most…..I am of course talking of my Wargaming friends with whom I feel so comfortable that they are really just like Brothers and Sisters from another Mother & Father…This is my Hobby Family…..and the best thing is…..they really get me! They understand when I talk about my love of Orcs, Giants, Dragons, Wizards & Super-human Soldiers battling it out in a darkly gothic settings, that I am not mad, I am into Warhammer! I have also found that the “Hobby” of Wargaming is a great tool to battling Depression and as such me and a friend are doing a year long project of building an army leading up to us getting out and playing a game!

My fellow Wargamer is Andy of Bears Wargaming, someone who has also suffered from the Mental Illness, and the game/miniature setting we have chosen is Warlord Games’ Historical Game – Hail Caesar!

PhotobucketSo Andy will be doing Romans and I will be doing Dacians & Sarmatians. With some models bought and donated we have set about building and painting our first models for our first unit.

Andy has built and pretty much painted a full formation ready for the battlefield (see below). This has me worried as I have painted 1 test model in the same time :/

A New Years Hobby Resolution 2013

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

So it’s a New Year and that means only one thing for Scorpius GLC’s World of Wargaming: A new New Years Hobby Resolution!

I’ll start off by saying that I am NOT going to be selling loads of miniatures! I am NOT saying “no miniatures/new games 2013″!

What I AM Saying is:

2013 will be different to previous years as I will be doing not one but two year-long projects this year alongside my usual love for the skirmish systems out there and the odd miniature fuelled board game!

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Year-long Project 1: Hail Caesar – Celts Army – Along with good friend, Andy Nash from Bears Wargaming who will be doing a Roman Force this will culminate in a game at Portal Wargaming Club at the end of the year. This will be done to showcase the positive nature that wargaming can have to help people suffering from Depression, a Mental Illness that has affected both me and Andy.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Year-long Project 2: Pre-Heresy – Imperial Fists Army – this year I will be doing the mighty Imperial Fists culminating in a special 30k multi-player game for my brothers 30th Birthday!!!

As well as doing these projects I will be showing some love to some Skirmish level games and miniature based Board Games.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Dark Age Project: CORE – I will be building and painting a CORE force for the awesome game Dark Age, I will also be running demo games and tournaments throughout the year at Portal Wargaming.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Bolt Action/Secrets of the Third Reich Project: Late War Wermacht – I will be building a German Force to be used for both Bolt Action and Secrets of the Third Reich based around a Late War Theme!

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Zombicide/Super Dungeon Explore – I will be running demo games and participation events of these games throughout the year at Portal Wargaming, so watch this space for more information!

As you can see I have an interesting year of wargaming planned, what’s your wargaming plans for 2013? Drop me a comment and let me know!

The Survivors of Kursk – SoTR Army part 2

So as you have probably read it is the road to the Secrets of the Third Reich UK Grand Tournament, I have built a 55RP Soviet force and have painted it in a record of 2 weeks……there are a few other bits to be painted as I may tweak my list for the tournament. I have gone with a Winter theme, heavy snow on the ground of the ruins of Kursk. Having lost the original battle of Kursk the Germans have decided to restore faith in the troops that a decisive win was in order and so they marched once again upon Kursk to crush the Soviets, these are the survivors of that battle! In the Weird War of Secrets of the Third Reich the battle is still raging in 1949!

Platoon Command Squad with the Special Characters: Hammer & Sickle

This was built using models from the SoTR range from West Wind Productions and models from the Bolt Action Range from Warlord Games. The models had all of their tabs removed and were based on these home made bases. The bases were made using Poly Filler and 28mm bricks which were then sanded and the models glued on, once painted snow was applied by mixing snow scatter and clear water and was applied to the bases with a cocktail stick, once dry blood splatter, mud, grass clumps and barbed wire were applied to the bases.
