Battle for Arguin – A Dystopian Wars Battle Report

The desert island of Arguin, off the Mauritanian Coast, was the prize of the Prussian Empire’s Medical Division. In 1721 Dr Plehn said the island and its Prussian colonisation had an impact on the history of medicine, stating in an article a list of more than seventy medicaments used throughout human history that can be found on the small desert island. Now, with the findings of the new technological age, the Island has become of interest to the Empire once more. Now under French control the Island is not heavily guarded and no, or little Naval presence is believed to be in the area!

Commodore Von Davifield has been ordered to take a small Naval Fleet comprising of his Emperor Class Battleship, 3 Reiver Class Cruisers, 9 Arminius Class Frigates with Air Support in the form of 2 Geier Class Bombers, 5 Dive Bombers and 5 Fighter Planes.

To Commodore Davifield’s surprise the fleet encountered a fleet of a similar size from The Covenant of Antarctica on the same heading.

3 Frigates of Davifield’s fleet approached the Covenant Fleet and the Dolphin like Diogenes Frigates closed the distance and opened fire….. The Naval Engagement for the Island of Arguin had begun!

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppThe Diogenes Class Frigates of the Covenant Fleet moved along the water in the same way in which a Dolphin would dip in and rise above the water. The Prussian Frigates were not ready for their speed and the Torpedoes that they launched at them resulting in the destruction of one of their ships. In time widespread damage would be caused against the Advancing Covenant Frigates as they were fired upon by the Reiver Class Cruisers travelling behind the Arminius Class Frigates!

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppThe Ptolemy Class Bombers of the Covenant were quick to respond to the damage caused to their fleet and proceeded to open fire on the approaching Prussian Frigates and Cruisers. They themselves came under fire from the mighty Fore Teslas of the Geier Class Prsussian Bombers that were on an intercept course. The Teslas ripped apart one of the Ptolomy Class Bombers and critically hit the other!

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppThe Naval conflict continued, both sides taking heavy casualties, the Critical hit chart saw some heavy use but the same result on the Prussian ships kept coming up….. Hard Pounding! The Covenant of Antarctica knew how to dish out the pain! The Prussian Cruisers manoeuvred around the Diogenes Class Frigates and opened fire with a broadside and Teslas but somehow only managed to scratch the fast Frigates!

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppThe Diogenes opened fire with their lasers on the sides of the cruisers and took some Hull Points off them! The Geier Class Prussian Bombers changed heading and turned their attention to the approaching Aristotle Class Covenant Battleship and the tail end of the Plato Class Cruisers causing a critical hit on the Cruisers but failing to even scratch the mighty Aristotle Class Battleship! In return the Battleship opened fire upon the Bombers and the Exploding Dice came into the game in a big way (all the red dice are 6′s)!

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppTime was called on the game because my Opponent, the truly “Super” Edd Barfield, was set to open up the club for me! So in the dying moments the Plato Class Cruisers manoeuvred around the island with some bombers!

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppThe conflict was over for today and neither side took control of Arguin. A Massive Thanks to my brother Edd Barfield who was a glorious opponent and the wonderful Gordon Snellgrove who helped set up the table for our battle!!!

Oops my 2011 Project & its now 2012!!

At the start of 2011 I pledged to do 2 NEW Armies or Game Systems, I failed I did 4!!! And so the final project has spilled over in to 2012!

Every year since I left Games Workshop as a Store Manager I set myself a New Years Hobby Resolution. In 2011 my Hobby Resolution was to try out new Armies or new Games Systems (as I had played pretty much Warhammer & Warhammer 40,000 solid for 20 years) and so I set about choosing. I decided on 2 new Games Systems rather than Armies and my rules to follow were:

  1. I MUST Buy the models
  2. I MUST Build the models
  3. I MUST Paint the models
  4. I MUST Play with the models
    AND MOST IMPORTANTLY -
  5. These 2 new Games Systems/Armies combined MUST cost less than investing in 1 Games Workshop Game System for the very first time!

So the Games Systems I decided on were:

  • Dystopian Wars by Spartan Games – A 1:1200 scale SteamPunk Victoriana Naval Game.

My Choice for SoTR 1949 was easy, it was going to be British (more about this in my other post)PhotobucketPhotobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

My choice for Dystopian Wars was as well, it was going to be the Prussian Empire!!!!Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

PhotobucketThe Resolution seemed brilliant, on paper……as I came to find out!! What I hadn’t thought about was my friends introducing me to another game system during the year….. this happened with the mighty Malifaux, a game I emmersed myself in completely buying 3 crews and building and painting them and then playing with them……even going to a Tournament, which is unheard of for me!!! (more about my forray into this game can be found elsewhere!)

So back on track with my original plan for Secrets of the third….oh whats this Warmachine you say oh go on then…. yep you guessed it, it happened again this time with Warmachine & Hordes for which i started a Menoth Army!!!

BY THIS TIME HALF THE YEAR HAD PASSED BY WITH ME BUYING, BUILDING AND PLAYING WITH 2 NEW GAME SYSTEMS…BUT NOT THE 2 I HAD PLANNED TO DO!!!!

So there was no better way for me to get back on track than to throw myself into a buying, building, painting and playing frenzy all driven by the need to get them ready for the UK SoTR 1949 Grand Tournament in October.

This left me 2 months of 2011 to get buying, building and painting my way through a Prussian Empire Fleet for Dystopian Wars. The late arrival of me to this game system in the year and the fact that it was the build up to Christmas and the Fabled Portal Wargaming Christmas Party didn’t give me any gaming time and so I felt it only fair that I play some games of it in the first Few Months of 2012! And this is where I find myself at the moment, playing the Wonderful Dystopian Wars with my new Prussian Empire Naval Fleet!!
